Dental Tooth Extractions

Generation of Smiles for over 90 Years

Sometimes, tooth extractions are the best way to improve the health of your teeth. Of course, we never want to extract any teeth, but sometimes a tooth is so damaged that further restorative or cosmetic dental treatments no longer suffice. Because of this, removing a damaged tooth ends up being the best course of action.

Why Might You Need a Tooth Extraction?

Our West Columbia dentist might recommend tooth extraction to patients who experience tooth decay, overcrowded teeth or impacted wisdom tooth.

Excessive Tooth Decay

Cavities are common and usually bring along pain as they get worse. However, there have been times when our patients haven’t realized they have a cavity or, if they exhibit pain, they might keep it to themselves. However, a cavity left untreated can result in advanced decay that damages the tooth beyond repair and creates an infection. In this case, we might recommend we pull the affected tooth so that the infection doesn’t spread.

Overcrowded Teeth

When your mouth is overcrowded, your teeth usually grow in crookedly, resulting in the need for Invisalign or dental braces. However, if your mouth is excessively overcrowded, sometimes a tooth needs to be pulled in order to make room for the teeth to shift while you undergo your braces or Invisalign treatment.

Impacted Wisdom Tooth

At one point, all humans used to have wisdom teeth, which were the third molars at the very back of our mouths. They came in handy when it came to tearing through our food before we used silverware. Today, though, we have evolved to a point where we don’t require these third molars anymore. Even though some people still have them, it is believed that soon enough humans won’t develop them anymore.

If you’re one of those who has wisdom teeth, they may grow in one of two ways: straight or impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth are more common, which means your wisdom teeth grow in at an angle. This usually results in the impacted wisdom tooth (or teeth) pushing your adjacent teeth, leading to overcrowding, crookedness, and an increased risk of tooth decay.

What to Expect if You’re Getting a Tooth Pulled

When the time comes to actually pull your tooth, rest assured that it won’t be like the movies that depict the process being a nightmare. Instead, we will ensure your comfort by sedating you so you don’t feel any pain. Once your tooth has been pulled and the sedation wears off, however, you will likely feel discomfort. Don’t worry, though; this can easily be managed with OTC pain and anti-inflammatory medication.
