Understanding Dental Benefits

Understanding Dental Benefits

When looking for a dentist, you usually have the choice of either an in-network or out-of-network dental professional. Some patients opt for in-network dentists since they have a contractual agreement with an insurance company. However, this doesn’t mean that out-of-network dentists don’t accept dental insurance. They do accept your insurance, and oftentimes, the difference is not very significant. Continue reading to learn more about your dental benefits when you visit West Columbia Dental.

Do Out-of-Network Dentists Accept Insurance?

Yes, many out-of-network dentists definitely accept different insurance plans, such as PPO or Preferred Provider Organization plans. The process and the amount of coverage might slightly differ if you opt for in-network care. Out-of-network dentists are very transparent with their pricing, allowing you to know upfront how much your procedure will cost. It’s important to check with your insurance provider about the coverage and reimbursement rates for out-of-network services to avoid surprises.

How Does Dental Insurance Work With Out-of-Network Dentists?

When you visit an out-of-network dentist, you’ll either be reimbursed for the services you paid for or your insurance will directly cover the costs. In the reimbursement model, you’ll need to pay for the treatment upfront. You’ll then submit the bill to your insurance company, which may reimburse you for a portion of the cost, based on your plan's out-of-network benefits. In direct billing, the insurance company will pay your dentist directly for the covered portion. After that, you'll be responsible for the remaining balance, if any.

Additional Benefits of Out-of Network Dental Care

So why do many patients choose out-of-network practices? There are many pros, such as flexibility. You have the freedom to choose your dentist, based on your personal preferences, needs, or recommendations from friends and family. Some patients also believe that out-of-network dentists provide superior care and specialized treatment. You can also build a trusted relationship with your dentist if you’ve been seeing them for years. An out-of-network dentist might spend more time with each patient because they aren't under volume pressures.

Use Your Dental Insurance Before the Year Ends

Dental insurance plans usually expire when the year ends and don’t carry over to the next year. To take advantage of your dental benefits, make sure to use your insurance before the year ends. Not only are you being cost-efficient, but you’re also taking care of your oral health. Dental insurance covers preventive care, so you can avoid complicated and expensive procedures. Using your dental coverage improves your overall health and well-being.

Impression-Free Dental Office in West Columbia

Impression-Free Dental Office in West Columbia

Unfortunately, many people dread going to the dentist, especially if they need to get impressions for certain procedures, such as:

  • Dentures
  • Dental crown
  • Dental implant
  • Dental braces

Gone are the days of messy and uncomfortable impressions. We are proud to announce that we have recently upgraded our West Columbia dentist office, so we no longer need to take traditional impressions. Instead, we take digital dental impressions. As our patient, you will now enjoy an efficient, comfortable, and more accurate experience when you need impressions.

The Downsides of Traditional Dental Impressions

Although dentists have relied on traditional dental impressions for decades, they are not without their faults:

  • Messy: For dental impressions, we use a substance that is similar to putty. We place it in a tray, which we then place over your teeth. After a few minutes, this putty will set and we will remove the tray. The putty not only creates a mess at our workstations but leftover bits of putty often get stuck on our patients’ teeth and lips.
  • Uncomfortable: Dental impressions aren’t exactly fun. If you’re especially sensitive, a traditional dental impression might trigger your gag reflex. You might experience an unpleasant flavor and after-taste as well.
  • Inaccurate: As much as we try to get accurate dental impressions, sometimes there are factors that cause errors. For instance, air bubbles or awkward placement of the putty may yield inaccurate results. If there are any issues with your traditional dental impressions, we will need to do them all over again.

How Digital Dental Impressions Work

For digital dental impressions, we use intraoral cameras that scan your bite. These powerful cameras create 3D models of your bite, allowing us to see your teeth with greater detail than ever before.

The Benefits of Digital Dental Impressions

There are many benefits of switching to digital dental impressions, including:

  • More comfort: Since we no longer have to use putty, you won’t need to worry about messes or reactions to the putty while it sets.
  • Speed: By using a camera instead of putty, impressions can be scanned far quicker now that there isn’t a need to wait for it to set. This means your appointment will be much shorter, too.
  • Visuals: Using a camera for digital dental impressions as opposed to traditional impressions helps us better visualize your bite and helps you better understand your treatment plan.
