Dental Crowns

Generation of Smiles for over 90 Years

Dental crowns, sometimes referred to as dental caps, are named so because they are placed on top of the tooth. Our West Columbia dentists may recommend a dental crown if your tooth is damaged and weakened, as a dental crown can protect it so it doesn’t require an extraction.

Who Might Benefit From Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are applicable to a number of cases. If you meet any of the following criteria and have enough bone structure, you may be a great candidate for a dental cap:

  • You’ve chipped your tooth due to injury
  • Your tooth has been cracked due to trauma
  • Your tooth is significantly decayed and is at risk of further decay
  • You’ve been told you need a dental bridge and a crown will help keep it in place

What to Expect When You Get a Dental Crown

First things first, if there is any decay (a cavity), then this needs to be treated before we can start the procedure for getting a dental crown.

When the time comes to begin the dental crown procedure, know that it will likely take two visits to West Columbia Dental. At your first visit, we will assess the affected tooth and prepare it. Preparing your tooth means that we will shave it down slightly in order to ensure that your crown fits snuggly over your tooth. Once we finish shaving/prepping the tooth, we will take impressions so our lab can create a custom fitted dental crown.

At the end of your first appointment, we will fit you with a temporary dental crown to keep your tooth protected until your permanent crown is complete.

At your second appointment, we will have your permanent crown ready and we’ll place it over the tooth. It’s important to get the right fit, so some adjustments may be made until you feel comfortable with the crown on. Once you’re comfortable, we will cement the new dental crown and you’ll walk out with a protected tooth that won’t succumb to further damage.
